The Future of iLembe’s Economy: Growth & Investment Highlights
The future of iLembe's economy is looking brighter than ever, thanks to a series of exciting developments and investments that are set to shape the region's growth. This was the central theme of the recent Business@Breakfast meeting, a collaboration between the iLembe Chamber of Commerce, The Robert Group, and The North Coast Courier, held at Sheffield’s Manor House. The event was an insightful platform to discuss current and upcoming projects that will drive economic prosperity for the region.
Influential Speakers & Key Insights
The event featured influential speakers, including Pat Lambie from the Collins Group, Kevin Swart from North Point Ballito, Kyle Pretorius, co-founder of Ballito Farmers Market, and Carol Church from Love North Coast. Each speaker shared valuable insights into the future of iLembe, particularly in the areas of real estate, infrastructure, retail, education, and industrial growth.
Key Highlights from the Meeting
1. Major Real Estate Investments
One of the most significant announcements was from Pat Lambie, who highlighted the impressive growth in coastal estates in the region. Zululami Luxury Coastal Estate and Seaton Estate alone have contributed over R1.42 billion in investments, providing more than 2,500 homes and sectional title units. These developments are transforming the area into a sought-after destination for homebuyers and investors alike, underlining the North Coast’s appeal as a prime real estate hub.
2. Road Upgrades to Ease Traffic Flow
Lambie also discussed ongoing and future road infrastructure upgrades that will improve accessibility across the North Coast. Notably, the P330/474 intersection (near Brettenwood and All Souls Anglican Church) will undergo a major overhaul with the construction of two slip lanes and the installation of traffic lights. This R6.9 million project is expected to be completed by mid-2024 and will significantly ease traffic congestion in the area.
In addition, work will begin on a new N2 interchange just north of Tiffany’s Shopping Centre, set to be finished by the end of 2024. These enhancements will bolster both local commuting and the overall business climate on the North Coast.
3. Retail and Education Expansion
In response to the growing demand from new residents, feasibility studies are underway for a new retail shopping centre that could rival regional malls in size, providing a one-stop destination for shopping and entertainment. Additionally, Lambie announced plans for a new high school, with space for approximately 1,000 students, set to open as early as 2025. These educational and retail developments will significantly enhance the community's infrastructure, meeting the needs of a rapidly expanding population.
4. Industrial Growth at North Point Ballito
Kevin Swart introduced the North Point Ballito business park, a 380,000 sqm development situated between the N2 and R102. The park will primarily serve as a business hub, but it also includes a residential component, Bliss Ballito, which is currently underway with 114 units slated for completion in May 2024.
A major highlight is the establishment of an Alpla plant, a global leader in plastics recycling and manufacturing. With an initial R1 billion investment, this facility is expected to create 150-200 direct permanent jobs, as well as 10,000-15,000 indirect jobs. Alpla, with over 23,000 employees worldwide, operates in 46 countries and had a turnover of €5.1 billion in 2022, reinforcing the significance of this industrial development to the region’s economy.
The Road Ahead for iLembe’s Economic Growth
With ongoing real estate development, key infrastructure projects, and a growing focus on sustainability and industry, iLembe is emerging as a powerhouse of economic growth on the KwaZulu-Natal North Coast. These developments are expected to create thousands of new jobs, attract investors from both locally and abroad, and provide a superior quality of life for residents.
As the region continues to develop, investors, homebuyers, and businesses alike are presented with exciting opportunities to be part of iLembe’s prosperous future. With key investments in education, retail, and industrial sectors, the North Coast is on track to become one of South Africa’s most desirable and dynamic regions for growth and investment.
